Shaping the Future of Play |
Worksite Projects
Clairview School Project, Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County The Westmoreland Intermediate Unit provides regional education services and support to school districts and technical schools in Westmoreland County. The Clairview School, operated by the WIU, is for students with specialized physical and/or educational needs who require modified classrooms and accessible facilities. The superb teachers, aides, administrative staff, and parents of Clairview all realized the need for a play area that every single child of the school could play on and utilize. With that goal, a dedicated group was formed to make that dream a reality. The fund raising and hard work paid off and Sports & Recreation Associates helped bring the dream to fruition.
On May 11, 2013, teacher Jeanne Kiss, principal Denise Kubistek, their playground committee, Intermediate Unit administrators, teachers, parents and friends of Clairview worked in the rain and cold to build the dream. Now, every child has the chance to play, whether it is to slide, climb, spin, touch or see, this playground provides something for everyone. This project was very personal to us at Sports & Recreation Associates and we are very proud to be a part this incredible project for these incredible children. Thanks to everyone at Clairview for letting us be a part of this very special place.

Oakhurst Park Project, Johnstown, Cambria County - Project of the Month
The Oakhurst Park project was a project created directly from the mind of Melissa Komar, Land Management Coordinator for the City of Johnstown, with some design help from Mark Ford. The project literally was an urban hardscape, with not much other than deteriorated asphalt. The new face of Oakhurst is greenscape with a lot of grass, trees and plantings. There is a new small basketball court, playground and picnic shelter. Initial funding came from Penn DOT with the balance of the funding provided by DCNR which really brought this project to life. Architect Stephen Parks from Altoona provided the blueprints and Larry Custer from Cambria County Redevelopment Authority administered the project.
